Yahoo! has selected PayPal president Scott Thompson as its new CEO, the company announced Wednesday, thus ending a search that began with Carol Bartz's firing in September.
Thompson has run PayPal, a subsidiary of eBay, since 2008 and becomes the fourth Yahoo! CEO in less than five years. Tim Morse, the company's CFO, will return to that position having served as interim CEO since Bartz' acrimonious departure.
"Scott brings to Yahoo! a proven record of building on a solid foundation of existing assets and resources to reignite innovation and drive growth, precisely the formula we need at Yahoo!," said Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock said in a statement. "His deep understanding of online businesses combined with his team building and operational capabilities will restore the energy, focus, and momentum necessary to grow the core business and deliver increased value for our shareholders."
Thompson takes the helm of a company that was one of the Internet's early search giants, but has since fallen on hard times. Though it retains a large user base and generates a great deal of revenue, its net value has dropped by more than 50 percent just in the past few years while its advertising business has slipped well behind the likes of Google and Facebook.

Indeed, Bostock said on a call Wednesday morning that Thompson will be "out there calling on advertisers."
While Wednesday's press release release trumpets Thompson's success in growing PayPal's user base and its revenue, the greater challenge at Yahoo is defining the company's identity.
Bartz was hired to succeed Jerry Yang in Jaunary of 2009 and her mission was to revitalize a flagging brand. She came from Autodesk, which makes design software, and had served on the boards of tech companies like Intel and Cisco.
While Bartz refocused Yahoo's efforts on content -- particularly in the sports and finance sectors -- and left search to one-time foe Microsoft, her new plan did not have the intended effect of increasing profitability. On the call Wednesday morning, Thompson faced questions about Yahoo's identity and opted not to go into specifics, emphasizing the company's great assets instead.

Many felt Bartz never established a clear mission at Yahoo, but that did not stop her from telling Fortune that Yahoo "f----ed" her over.
Since Bartz' departure, there have been many rumors about the potential sale of Yahoo, with a group of suitors including private equity firm Silver Lake and another ailing early industry leader -- AOL.
This is not the first time that a potential Yahoo sale has been bandied around, and back in 2008 the company resisted Microsoft's attempted takeover. It later struck an advertising search partnership with the company.
Though the chances of a full sale would appear to further diminish with this announcement, the possibility of a smaller divestiture remains. Yahoo has been looking to sell part of its stakes in its East Asian holdings, notably the Alibaba Group in China and its Japanese affiliate. There have been rumors that if such a sale does not occur, Alibaba will look to strike a partnership with a private equity firm to buy all of Yahoo.
Thompson's new job seems to have surprised his old bosses at eBay, as in an internal memo obtained by AllThingsD, eBay CEO Jason Donahoe says he was "shocked." Thompson just told him of his decision on Tuesday.
Prior to serving as president of PayPal, Thompson was its Chief Technology Officer.

Some like it not: ABC's critically reviled cross-dressing comedy "Work It," which was blasted by transgender activists even before it aired, isn't very popular with audiences, either.
The show debuted Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. to a soft 2.0 rating/5 share in the 18-49 demographic and 6.1 million total viewers, down 17 percent from the debut of the quickly cancelled "Man Up," the show that held its time period in the fall.

ABC landed in third-place in the ratings, and CBS in first. CBS swept the top three ratings slots, starting with "NCIS" at 8, which was the evening's top-rated program. It rose 17 percent from its last original episode three weeks ago to a 4.2/11 in the demo and 20 million total viewers (which also made it the most-watched program of the night). "NCIS: LA" the following hour was also up 17 percent from its last original airing three weeks ago, receiving a 3.5/8 in the demo and 17 million total viewers. "Unforgettable" closed the night at 10 with a 14 percent boost from its last original three weeks ago, posting a 2.5/6 in the demo and 11.6 million total viewers. Overall the network scored an average 3.4/9 in the demo, far and away the night's best performance, and 16.2 million total viewers -- also making it the most-watched network by far.
NBC scored second-place despite disappointments: The season premiere of "The Biggest Loser" at 8 plunged 30 percent from last January's premiere with a 2.3/6 and 6.4 million total viewers, making it the lowest-rated spring premiere for the series so far. "Parenthood" at 10 also suffered, dropping 19 percent from its last original airing five weeks ago and hitting a series low with a 1.7/4 in the demo and 4.9 million total viewers.

"Last Man Standing" began ABC's primetime slate at 8, drawing a 2.4/6 in the demo and 7.8 million total viewers. The premiere of "Celebrity Wife Swap" at 9, after "Work It" at 8:30, pulled a 2.2/5 in the demo and 6 million total viewers. The night closed on a down note for the network, with "Body of Proof" tying a series low with a 1.5/4 in the demo and 6.9 million total viewers.
Fox ran repeats throughout the evening.

Dr. Conrad Murray's medical license has been suspended by the Medical Board of California, a spokesperson for the board confirms to TheWrap.

Murray, who's currently serving a four-year sentence in L.A. County Jail after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, has 15 days to surrender his wall certificate and wallet license.

A spokesperson for the board told TheWrap that license suspension is standard operating procedure for doctors who've been convicted of felonies.
Murray can appeal the decision within those 15 days -- a distinct possibility, since he's also appealed his criminal conviction. Should Murray file an appeal, the board would set up a hearing on the matter.
Murray was also licensed to practice medicine in Nevada and Texas. In April 2010, the Texas Medical Board restricted Murray's license, prohibiting him from administering anesthetic agents, including propofol, which was found to have killed Jackson. The Nevada Board of Medical Examiners has also suspended his license.

Sunday night's debut of the series, which aired from 9 to 11 p.m., featured Winfrey interviewing Aerosmith rocker-turned-"American Idol" judge Steven Tyler at his Lake Sunapee, N.H., residence.
To put Sunday night's numbers in context, the "Oprah's Next Chapter" premiere represented a 463 percent increase in the demo over the network's December 2011 average in that time period. Only the premiere of "Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes," which aired on Jan. 1, 2011, has scored better than the "Next Chapter" premiere, drawing a 1.11 in the demo and 1.2 million total viewers.
